The 12 Week Year by Brian P. Morgan and Michael Lennington
It was a lovely day at work on the farm when my brother texted me a screenshot of the cover of the book ‘The 12 Week Year’ by Brian P. Morgan and Michael Lennington. He simply messaged ‘keen? 🔥🔥🔥’ along with it. Curious about the book, I searched for it on Spotify hoping to find a podcast that could give me some information. However, instead of a podcast, I found the entire book available. With one AirPod in my ear, rigger gloves on, and the sun shining down on me, I realised I had just taken my first steps into a new journey
Are You Living The Life You’re Capable of Living?
I’ll be upfront—I admit to catching only about 75% of The 12 Week Year because I wore just one AirPod and was hard at work on the farm. However, in just 20 minutes, I was completely hooked. And if I had to summarise what resonated with me from the book, it would be two quotes that work together hand in hand.
The first quote is: “There are two lives, the one you’re living, and the one you’re capable of living.”
The second quote is: “Don’t settle for anything less than the life you are capable of.”
It’s crazy to think that a simple combination of words could make me question my entire life up until this point. Yet there I was.
Make A Plan And Write It Down
After finishing The 12 Week Year to say I was G’dup is an understatement. I had gone from having an idea of starting this very blog you are hopefully reading and getting into shape. To now having a one year goal (12 weeks). The only thing left was to make a plan and write it down.
- Define Your Vision: Clearly articulate your long-term vision or goals. What do you want to achieve in the next 3 to 5 years?
- Set Annual Goals: Break down your long-term vision into specific, measurable annual goals. These should be challenging but achievable within a year.
- Quarterly Goal Setting: Take your annual goals and break them down further into quarterly objectives. These are the goals you’ll focus on during each 12-week period.
- Weekly Planning: Break down your quarterly objectives into weekly action plans. Identify the key activities or tasks you need to complete each week to make progress toward your quarterly goals.
- Daily Execution: Commit to daily actions that align with your weekly plans. These should be specific, measurable tasks that move you closer to your goals.
- Review and Adjust: Regularly review your progress against your goals. Adjust your plans and activities as needed to stay on track and maximise your results.
By writing these steps done and committing to following them I, and you create a structured framework for achieving your long-term vision through focused and intentional action over the 12 Week Year.
Daily Planner + Journal + Read = Success?
I am determined to achieve success in my 12 Week Year journey. In order to do so I researched the tools that would help me reach my goals. After watching videos of successful entrepreneurs, I discovered that they all had a few things in common: a daily planner, a journal, and a habit of reading every day. I was inspired by their commitment to these practices and decided to follow in their footsteps.
I ordered a daily planner, a journal, and a book from Amazon, and I was excited to start using them. My brother recommended “Principles Your Guided Journal” by Ray Dalio, and I am already reading “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. However I was not making great progress, which is why I decided that during my 12 Week Year journey I would read at least 20 minutes every day. I also asked ChatGPT for book recommendations and chose “How To Win Friends & Influence People” by Dale Carnegie.
Lastly, I needed a daily planner, and I chose “The High Performance Planner” because honestly I just liked its look and price. I was motivated by the thought that these tools would help me achieve my goals and become successful. Only time will tell I guess.
Whats next?
Now that I’ve devoured the book (listened keenly), faced tough questions, crafted a solid plan, and armed myself with what I consider the right tools, success feels within reach. I suppose the only thing left is to do, is the work!
